Understanding VAT Partial Exemption

What is Partial Exemption?

  • • Applies to businesses making both taxable and exempt supplies
  • • Limits the amount of input VAT that can be recovered
  • • Recovery based on proportion of taxable supplies
  • • Requires separate calculation for each VAT period

Recovery Calculation

  • • Recovery % = Taxable Supplies ÷ Total Supplies × 100
  • • Directly attributable input VAT is fully recoverable
  • • Residual input VAT is partially recoverable
  • • Annual adjustment may be required

De Minimis Test

  • • If exempt supplies are less than 5% of total supplies
  • • AND non-recoverable VAT is less than K625 per month
  • • Then all input VAT can be recovered
  • • Simplifies VAT administration for small exempt activities
